What is Verb and what types of Verb?



Verb: A Verb is a word or phrase indecating an action, event or state. Example:

  1. She teaches us English.- (action)
  2. The accident happended last night.- (event)
  3. He is in poor health.- (state)

Verb can be mainly divided into two types:

  1. Finite Verb.
  2. Non-finite Verb.



1. Finite Verb: The verb that completes the statement of the speaker is called finite verb. Example:
  1. She sings a song.
  2. They play cricket.
  3. The lion roared to see the mouse.
Finite Verb can be divided into two parts:
  1. Principal Verb.
  2. Auxiliary Verb.
1. Principal Verb: The verb that make a complete statement without any help is called principal verb. Such as: go, run, eat, see, like, give, walk, make, help, play, sing etc.  Example: 
  1. She goes to school.
  2. He writes a letter.
  3. A barking dog seldom bites.
Principal Verb can be divided into two parts:
  1. Transitive Verb.
  2. Intransitive Verb.
1. Transitive Verb: The verb that has an object is called transitive verb. Such as: read, write, drink, killed, eat, speak, listen etc. Example:
  1. I drink water.
  2. The boy eats rice.
  3. The tiger killed a deer.
2. Intransitive Verb: The verb that has no object is called intransitive verb. Such as: sleep, blow, boom etc. Example:
  1. The child sleeps.
  2. The wind blows.
  3. Flowers boom.
2. Auxiliary Verb: The verb that helps a principal verb of  form tense, mood or voice is called auxiliary verb or helping verb. Example:
  1. Primary Auxailiary.
  2. Modal Auxaliary.
1. Auxiliary Verb: Primary auxiliaries are used to form different verb tenses and construct various types of sentences. Example:
  1. "Be" verbs: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been Example: She is running.

  2. "Have" verbs: have, has, had Example: They have finished their work.

  3. "Do" verbs: do, does, did Example: He does not like coffee.

2. Modal Verb: The verb that has a meaning and also helps the principal verb is called modal verb. Such as: may, might, can, could, will, would,shall, should, must, ought to etc.

2. Non-finite: The verb that cannot express the staement of the speaker completely is called non-finite verb. Such as: to sing, to play, playing, crying, to eat, eating etc. Example: 
  1.  She wanted to sing a song.
  2. They wanted to play football.
  3. I saw the woman crying with her thin baby in her arms.
